What are data cables used for?

Data cables, such as ethernet cables, transport information between devices and nodes. For example, the NBN (National Broadband Network) requires data cabling.

Despite the small size, they play a big role in bringing the world to our fingertips while at home. Additionally, they’re an added convenience in a time where most of us rely on the latest technologies and home offices.

Is all data cabling the same?

Not quite. There are three main types, and you’ll already be aware that things like an Ethernet cable are shaped very differently to what you charge a phone with.

The three main types are:

Fiber Optic: Transmits data in the form of light. The preferred method for fast internet connections.
Coaxial Cable: Carries signals at a high frequency, with a central core conductor surrounded by an insulator. Used for things such as Foxtel and digital phone networks.
Twisted Pair: Two copper core wires, twisted throughout the cable. Tends to only work well over shorter distances.

What are USB cables?

The USB cables you use with a phone are a type of a data cable, however, they are vastly different to an ethernet cable trailing from your modem.

Not all USB cables are the same, either. Even those that look the same may not have the internal parts to charge a phone and transfer data, it may only charge a phone. You want to be sure you have the right USB cable and USB powerpoints at home.
