What are downlights?

Downlights are lights that are recessed into an opening in your ceiling, making them a less intrusive option than your traditional lighting.

Downlights should typically be installed by a qualified electrician due to the nature of the installation. Once installed, downlights shine light in a downward direction, diffusing either a broad or narrow light below.

LED downlights on the other hand use a similar setup, however the lights themselves are different. An LED (light emitting diode) is energy efficient and longer lasting compared to that of traditional halogen lighting.

What to consider when installing LED downlights?

One of the most important considerations when you’re thinking of having LED downlights installed is space.

The goal is to have light washing over you in an even spread, rather than one central location.

An average LED downlight puts out around 800 lumens, and it is recommended to be placed 1 metre from the wall, and include spacing of around 1.2-1.5 metres between each downlight in the ceiling.

While you can also purchase specific spotlights, an LED downlight can also be installed in a way that will highlight anything you want to show off, whether it’s a piece of art or family heirloom.

Are LED downlights better than halogen downlights?

Yes. LED downlights are definitely the better choice. The reason is that they’re more cost effective, being cheaper to run, and they last much longer than halogen, with a lifespan of around 10 years!

LED lights also don’t run hot. When you handle halogen globes that may have just blown, they’re incredibly hot. You won’t get that with an LED. This also means you can safely insulate around them without any fear of them causing fires.

If you’re still not convinced, don’t worry, the Federal Government has made the decision for you. From September 2020 the halogen light was made unavailable to purchase, looking towards a more economical future for all Australians.

How to install downlights?

Due to the type of installation required, downlights should be installed by a licensed and fully qualified electrician. The installation of downlights includes wiring into ceiling cavities, making them a dangerous job to do on your own and without the necessary skills. How many LED downlights per room?

As a general rule of thumb, it’s recommended to install LED downlights 1m away from each wall. The space between each LED downlight should be between 1.2m-1.5m, taking into consideration the size of your room and how much light is required in each.
