How do LED lights work?

LEDs are light emitting diodes. LED lights are extremely energy efficient and long lasting, and they are steadily replacing conventional lighting.

That’s because they use 85 per cent less energy and last for over a decade, or 50,000 hours. These days they are bright enough to light sports fields and come in a full range of colour temperatures from warm white to cool white. They come on and turn off instantly and are perfect for smart lighting systems.

Are LED lights dimmable?

Yes and no. Not all LED lights are dimmable due to the low amounts of wattage they consume. Therefore, some dimmers do not work, at least not in the way we’re used to. For example, an LED light may be dimmable but not as much as a halogen or incandescent light. Or, the light may even turn off when dimmed low.

Despite that the good news is you can buy LED lights with dimmer settings so it’s often best to have the right system picked out first for installation, rather than hoping it matches what is currently installed.

Can LED lights overheat?

No. LED lights do not heat up like halogen globes do, and are a very low risk of overheating or causing damage. How does it stay cool? There’s a heat sink at the base of the light which draws the heat to fins that increase the surface area and dissipate the heat. So this means the electronics stay cool and the overall temperature remains low.

Why is my LED light flickering?

A flickering LED could be because of several reasons, including:

Dimmer compatibility: If your dimmer function and LED light are not suited, the bulb can flicker.
Loose wiring: The actual wiring or fitting could be the issue, which is why we recommend a qualified electrician installs all LED lights initially.
